Building Blocks

6 cyanotypes on textile (2016)
157×220 cm

For this project, Nanna Debois Buhl walked through several areas of Bucharest and collected objects of significance to past and current urban development. The series of cyanotypes depicts building material from new shopping malls, condos, and other buildings important to recent development, which has been defined to a large degree by increased privatization, as well as building material retrieved from abandoned industrial buildings of the socialist era. The cyanotypes were exposed to sunlight at the site of the source material’s location. The hanging textiles carry loose references to flags and aristocratic banners, bearers of power and symbolic meaning.
