Resembling aquatic organisms or sonograms of embryos, the photogram series Cosmic Creatures depicts computer components that Buhl acquired on eBay which were (allegedly) part of NASA’s Apollo missions. The photograms are analog camera-less photographs, made in the darkroom by placing the computer parts on light sensitive photographic papers. The photograms point to the many complex human-machine interactions that unfolded during the preparations for the Apollo 11 moon landing (1969), where there was a heated debate about whether humans (the astronauts) or machines (the spacecraft’s computer) should have ultimate control during the execution of the landing.
